America’s third biggest grape growing state – behind only California and Washington – New York is a relative newcomer to Finger lakes wineries industry with the majority of its wineries small businesses less than 30 years old. New York can boast over 1,600 vineyards and more than 400 licensed wine producers dotted throughout most of its 62 counties. Eighty percent of its grape region is planted with the native Labrusca grapes, most notably Concord, used for the production of grape juice and jelly. The Finger Lakes region near Lake Ontario is carving out a reputation for its Riesling and Chardonnay, Long Island is best known for Chardonnay, Merlot and the Cabernets, while the picturesque Hudson River Region’s most popular lines are Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc.
