Known as ‘The Garden of France due to the large volume of vineyards and orchards, the Loire Valley, comprising 280 kilometres, is nestled in north central France on the Loire River. The State boasts four or five grape varieties and they exhibit a light and invigorating with palpable acidity – and generally moderately priced. More than 50 percent of the Loire Valley wines are white. The dry wines made from Sauvignon blanc and Pinot noir grapes can be found in the east (Sancerre and Pouilly) and west (Muscadet) with the often sweeter wines of Touraine and Anjou in the middle, made from the Loire’s own grape, Chenin Blanc. The red Pinot noir wines from the region are noted for being light in both body and colour, while the production of sparkling wine in the Loire Valley makes it second only to Champagne. The majority of the wineries in the Loire Valley were boutique, family owned businesses that did a lot of estate bottling, but they are now gradually giving way to co-operatives.
