North America’s second biggest vine-grower, the north-western state of Washington Biggest wine growing regions, more than 800 wineries and 43,000 acres planted to grapes. Originally known for the quality of its Merlots, Washington, in more recent times, has gained worldwide recognition for Syrah wines and, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The concentration of the State’s wine production is carried out in the eastern half, primarily the Walla Walla Valley, whose continental climate is conducive for growing grapes for Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. The famed Ste. Michelle Winery, located near Seattle, is recognised as North America’s leading producer of Riesling wine with two millions cases a year.
