Pyrenees Wine Region, Victoria

The Victorian Pyrenees fold across rugged, quartz-veined hills in the state’s west around Avoca, Moonambel, and Redbank. Warm days, cool nights, and lean, ancient soils yield reds of concentration and spine – Shiraz above all – from a district whose modern era was launched in the 1960s and which remains defiantly boutique.

What Makes Pyrenees Wines Distinctive?

Pyrenees Shiraz is powerful but shapely – black fruit, regional mint and spice, and a firm mineral line from the stony soils – with Dalwhinnie and Summerfield among its standard-bearers. Cabernet Sauvignon is similarly structured, and the region’s sparkling credentials trace to Taltarni and Blue Pyrenees Estate, whose French-influenced beginnings shaped the district. Viognier and Chardonnay lead the whites from a small, close-knit circle of producers.
