Australia has been among the top bracket of wine producing Australian Wines countries in the world for more than 30 years with the country now exporting Australian wines to 123 countries. Whilst Australia did not have any native grape varieties that to lend themselves to suitable grape growing, records show that the first instance of European wine production in Australia dates back to 1791 when two bunches of grapes were found in the governors garden. It was later discovered that these were brought into the country from cuttings of vines from South Africa.
Today Australia produces in excess of 100 different grape varieties at over 2400 wineries located around the country, headed up by Margaret River in the west and the Yarra Valley in the east and has gained the reputation of producing some of the words best Australian Wines.
