San Juan Wine Region

Characteristics

The San Juan wine region is Argentina’s second largest wine-producing province after Mendoza. However, its identity differs significantly from cooler, high-altitude neighbours. Importantly, San Juan lies north of Mendoza in a dry, sun-drenched landscape. As a result, vineyards experience some of the country’s warmest growing conditions. Consequently, grapes ripen quickly and develop generous fruit concentration. Moreover, abundant sunshine ensures reliable vintages and consistent yields. Because rainfall is minimal, irrigation from Andean snowmelt remains essential. Therefore, vineyard management focuses on water efficiency and careful canopy control. Historically, San Juan became known for volume production and fortified wines. Nevertheless, quality-focused producers have reshaped the region’s reputation. In addition, modern technology, improved vineyard practices and better  wine standards result in San Juan now producing both commercial and premium wines.
