Salta Wine Region, Argentina

The San Juan wine region is Argentina’s second-largest wine province, spreading through sun-drenched valleys north of Mendoza – the broad Tulum Valley around the capital, the scenic Zonda and Ullum, and the high, stony Pedernal at up to 1,500 metres. Hot days, reliable Andean water, and a long dry season make this Syrah’s Argentine home, alongside generous Bonarda, Malbec, and the province’s own aromatic Torrontés Sanjuanino.

What Makes San Juan Wines Distinctive?

San Juan made Syrah its own: the province’s heat and light deliver wines of dark plum, violet, and black-pepper spice, gaining marked freshness and mineral edge in the high Pedernal Valley – San Juan’s premium frontier. Bonarda thrives in the warmth, Malbec turns ripe and rounded, and Torrontés Sanjuanino keeps whites perfumed and easy. Winemaking history runs deep – Graffigna dates to 1870 – and the province’s traditions extend to fortified wines and vermouth alongside its modern varietal range.

San Juan Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

• Syrah – The provincial flagship: dark, spicy, and sun-charged.
• Bonarda – Juicy, generous, heat-loving red.
• Malbec – Ripe and rounded, finer from Pedernal altitude.
• Torrontés Sanjuanino – The province’s own aromatic white.
• Fortified and vermouth traditions – A historic San Juan strength.
