Characteristics

The Salta wine region is one of Argentina’s most dramatic and distinctive viticultural areas. Unlike many global wine regions, Salta sits at extreme altitude in the country’s northwest. Importantly, vineyards here rank among the highest in the world. As a result, grape growing occurs under intense sunlight and wide temperature shifts. Consequently, grapes develop thick skins, deep colour, and concentrated flavours. Moreover, cool nighttime temperatures preserve acidity despite strong daytime heat. Therefore, wines from Salta often combine power with freshness. In addition, the dry climate significantly reduces fungal disease risk. Because rainfall is limited, irrigation relies on pure Andean meltwater. Salta is especially renowned for Torrontés, Argentina’s signature aromatic white grape. Typically, Torrontés from Salta shows floral intensity, citrus brightness, and crisp structure. However, unlike sweeter interpretations, these wines are usually dry and vibrant. Meanwhile, Malbec thrives at altitude, offering dark fruit, spice, and firm tannins. Similarly, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat perform well.
