Profile Description
SALT is looking to partner with people or organisations who have aligned values and a desire to invest in sustainable, effective preventative solutions within a society that is now struggling with a range of complex mental health issues.
Statement of Need:
Our society is facing an alarming rise in mental health challenges including:
- Rising suicide rates
- Increased anxiety and depression
- Self-harm and eating disorders
- Substance dependence
- Social isolation and loneliness
Finding Sustainable Solutions
Governments are trying to address these issues but the majority of funding goes towards reactive measures, rather than preventative ones. There will never be enough psychologists, counsellors, recovery centres to deal with the needs. Additionally, these reactive responses are expensive, oversubscribed and generally only accessed when the issues are deeply entrenched.
The Power of Sport
Sporting clubs are typically 3 times more connected than schools or workplaces. People are there because they want to be there. Sporting clubs are filled with volunteers who want to support the next generation of kids growing up around them. They are well meaning but have not been trained in how they can be most influential and effective. Once this training is received and embraced, local sporting clubs can be highly effective, low cost, catalysts of widespread social and emotional support and guidance

The power of low-level intervention by people who care
Australia’s leading mental health expert and Patron of SALT Sport and Life Training, Professor Patrick McGorry says the following:
‘Young people are less likely than any other age group to access mental health services for a number of reasons such as stigma, reduced mental health literacy, poor access to appropriate services and inadequate health system structures’. McGorry and Mei 2018

SALT Clubs with Heart Memberships
Both senior and junior clubs can sign up for the 2 year ‘Clubs with Heart’ Membership Program. The club then has a series of sequential sessions that build from a realistic appraisal of the current club culture, identifies and addresses the key barriers that exist, and then sets the club up for sustainable, cultural change.
Going Deeper to Create Sustainable Change
We know that education makes a massive difference but it is only the starting point. SALT have a mantra that is ‘Create a new E.R.A. in your club. Education creates the understanding and motivation to change but its impact can wear off in time. The next stage for a club community to embrace is Responsibility. Responsibility in a club is not limited to the appointed leaders. Everyone is responsible because everyone is a leader. Leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less. We must all use our influence for the good of the club community. The last part is accountability. We must hold people to account if they act outside of the values of the club. This is the third part of the process. It comes after we have educated and made it clear what responsibilities people have to the club
