Wine Regions of Rhone

Situated in southern France along the banks of the Rhone River, the vineyards of the Rhone Valley fall naturally into two parts – the north, which accounts for 10 percent of total production, almost all fine wine, and the much more extensive southern region. The most widely known grape of the northern Rhone is Shiraz, but the region can also boast three highly distinctive and now fashionable white wine grapes in Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier. While the southern Rhone, owing to its Mediterranean climate, has distinguished itself for the production of red, white and rose wines. Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a blend comprising 19 varieties of grapes, is the south’s most popular red wine. The region has over 6,000 winegrowing properties including 1,800 private wineries and 100 co-operatives, producing in total around 4 million hectolitres of wine per annum.
