Located in the south-eastern coastal strip of Australia is Victoria – the smallest state of the Australian continent. Fringed by the Bass Strait and Tasmania to its south, Victoria is home to many Aboriginal groups, the bustling metropolitan city of Melbourne, the Grampians National Park, and the Phillip Island, which is famed for its sunset penguin parade, Australian fur seals, and motorsports racing.

Many Australians and visitors flock to the Victoria region (Yarra valley wineries) for its wine tourism. The Mornington Peninsula, especially, is famous for its exquisite wineries, remote bays, and rolling hills while Heathcote, Rutherglen, Pyrenees, and the Yarra Valley feature some of the most premium labels of Australian wines.

Viticulture and wine-producing in the Victoria region can be traced back to the mid-1800s. In 1890 however, the industry suffered a huge decline due to pest phylloxera, but the area was able to regain its strength just over half a decade later. Although ranked third in terms of volume output, Victoria boasts more wine producers than any other wine-making state in Australia, with more than 850 wineries dotting across its 237,629 km² surfaces.

Victoria is also the proud host for the annual International Wine Festival which showcases wines from around the world. The great diversity of climate and landforms in Victoria allows the region to yield a wide selection of premium wines to suit every palette. For instance, the northern regions of Victoria – Heath cote, Glen rowan, and Rutherglen – are known for their warmer climate and robust wine characters while the Morning ton Peninsula, Geelong, and Port Philip areas produce the cool climate wine varieties.

For these reasons, the Victoria region is capable to offer an array of Italian and European varieties such as the fortified wine of Ruthenium, full-bodied reds, top shelf chardonnay, pinto nor, pinto Gregorio and more. Each subregion offers its own unique distinct range of cool climate as well as its versions of fine sparkling wines. Single varietal wines are also produced in Victoria, these include the Australian mainstays of Shiraz and Chardonnay as well as Cabernet, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.

The late 1990s and 2000s have also seen the increased cultivation of Viognier, Sangiovese, Pinot noir, Pinot Gris, and Nebbiolo, including the more peculiar Graciano, Lagrein, and Tannat. Victorian red wines are often described as more elegant than the powerful styles of South Australia, although the style of wine ranges from lighter elegant Pinot Noirs to medium and full-bodied Shiraz and Cabernets The Rutherglen, on the other hand, is renowned for its distinctive Madeira-like fortified wines such as Liqueur Muscat.
